Richard was appointed Consultant Otolaryngologist & Skull Base Surgeon at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth and Children’s Hospitals in 1997. He offers specialist expertise in all aspects of ear disease, medically and surgically, in both adults and children.

He was trained in London and Cambridge and was awarded a JLO Fellowship to the Universitatspital in Zurich and a TWJ Fellowship to the Causse Ear Clinic in France. He was also awarded the intercollegiate gold medal for the best performance in the FRCS(ORL-HNS) examination. During his training in Cambridge, Richard undertook pioneering research into the molecular genetics of tumours involving nerve tissue. His research led to the award of an MD in 1996. For his research he was awarded the Xomed-Treace Prize (1994), and the Royal Society of Medicine short papers prize (1993).

Following the completion of his higher surgical training and prior to moving to Birmingham, Richard was appointed Clinical Instructor at the University of California in San Francisco.

Research and development continues to take a central role in Richard’s professional life, although this has leaned more towards surgical innovation. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council.

Richard has more than 100 publications on a variety of subjects and has researched many aspects of facial paralysis investigation and management. He lectures regularly at both National and International Courses and Conferences.

​

As a surgeon with an academic interest, he serves on the Editorial Board of a number of International Journals including Otology & Neurotology, the Journal of Laryngology and Otology and the International Journal of Advanced Otology.

He is heavily involved in postgraduate teaching and training and has served as Vice-President of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Otology. He is the current Secretary of the British Society for the History of ENT and the British Society of Otology.
