Why Do Varicose Veins Appear?

Varicose veins are visible, twisted, swollen blood vessels that appear on the surface of our skin. But what causes them and why do they often appear on our legs and feet?

What causes varicose veins and why do they often appear on legs and feet? They are caused when the one-way valves in our veins that open to supply blood towards our heart become weakened or damaged. This causes blood to flow backwards and pool, which creates pressure and makes them swell and enlarge. Quite simply, varicose veins often appear in our legs and feet because standing or walking increases pressure in the veins of our lower body. It's why those who are on their feet for prolonged periods of time tend to be more susceptible to developing the condition.

How to best treat varicose veins Here at Premier Veins, we offer a wide range of minimally invasive treatments that provide a 12-month guarantee. These include radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) This is considered the first line of treatment; it's a walk-in/walk-out procedure performed under local anaesthetic. It uses radiofrequency energy (like laser) to improve the appearance of varicose veins and relieve symptoms including: heaviness, pain and skin irritation.

RFA can also be used alongside Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy to treat more troublesome, superficial issues. It only leaves a tiny amount of scarring, bruising and swelling, and the procedure is generally less painful and more convenient than other varicose vein treatments.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UFGS) is arguably the quickest, most cost-effective and least invasive way to treat more superficial trunk and reticular varicose veins. It helps to relieve leg pain and skin irritation, and improves the appearance of your legs and feet.

UGFS is a walk-in/walk-out procedure performed under local anaesthetic, where foam is injected into the vein. Compression pads, a bandage and elastic compression stockings will need to be worn for three to five days post-procedure. Patients should notice reduced symptoms immediately after treatment, with an improvement in the appearance of varicose veins soon after. It can be performed independently or alongside RFA to resolve vein health issues in a short visit.

Are there any risks or complications if varicose veins are not treated? Sadly, varicose veins do not disappear or heal on their own. Aside from being a cosmetic issue, if left untreated they can lead to other more serious health conditions including:

  • Bleeding;

  • Blood clots;

  • Superficial thrombophlebitis;

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT); and

  • Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
